It Is Better to Be Ruled by a Philosopher King Essay
If one wishes to perfect oneââ¬â¢s soul and reach enlightenment, then it is definitely better for that one to be ruled by a philosopher-king; however, if oneââ¬â¢s main goal in life is to live happily and securely without worries, then it is arguably better for that one to be ruled by a prince. One should, however, seek to perfect oneââ¬â¢s soul rather than seek for happiness and security alone, hence, it is better to be ruled by a philosopher-king. This paper will first lay out the reasons why one should be governed by either a Machiavellian prince or a philosopher-king, and point out that the different benefits between the two rulers depends on the different sets of priorities in a citizenââ¬â¢s life. Then, the paper will argue why one should pursue the values under the rule of a philosopher-king rather than that under the rule of a prince. Finally, it will look at some counter argument, analyze and assert why the thesis is still superior. If oneââ¬â¢s main wish is to live happily and securely, then it might be better for that one to be ruled by a Machiavellian prince, since a Machiavellian princeââ¬â¢s main goal as a ruler is to secure his state. The perfect prince would appear to be ââ¬Å"merciful, faithful, humane, honest, and religiousâ⬠, but ââ¬Å"know how to enter into evil, when forced by necessityâ⬠to ââ¬Å"maintain his state. â⬠Consequently, the people living under this prince would benefit in the peace that comes with his reign. Moreover, the people are free to pursue whatever materialistic goals they want, so long as they do not violate the laws of the prince. The prince is also neither ââ¬Å"rapacious and a usurper of the property and the women of his subjectsâ⬠nor is he trying to ââ¬Å"maintain a name for liberalityâ⬠so much that he ââ¬Å"burden the people extraordinarily, to be rigorous with taxes. â⬠Hence, the people living under a princeââ¬â¢s reign will enjoy a sufficient life with stability, security and freedom to pursue their materialistic wants. If ones seek to perfect their souls, to come out of the cave and ââ¬Å"into the sunlightâ⬠, then life under the rule of a philosopher-king is ideal. Under the rule of a philosopher-king, the king will try to ââ¬Å"[turn] the whole soul until it is able to study that which is and the brightest things that is, namely, the one we call the good. â⬠To do this, one must first ââ¬Å"rid of [feasting, greed, and other such pleasures]â⬠that one ââ¬Å"had been hammered at from childhoodâ⬠, and then ââ¬Å"[turn] to look at true things. The philosopher-king, whose visions and knowledge is true and wise, will help educate the people by changing theirs desires, ââ¬Å"[try] to redirect it appropriately. â⬠A life under a philosopher-king will benefit oneââ¬â¢s soul rather than oneââ¬â¢s materialistic life. It is obvious as explained previously that the key to the desirability of the two different systems, one under the Machiavellian prince and one under the ph ilosopher-king, lies in how the people prioritize what they look for in life; hence, different sets of values will be satisfied by different political systems. Thus, at first look, it seems impossible to determine which system is better because they are based on completely different sets of values. However, as one set is arguably better to pursue than the other, consequently, one political system will be more desirable than the other. The set of criteria in question is that under the rule of the philosopher-king. It is better for a person to pursue a knowledgeable, true, and rational life that a philosopher-king promises to provide than a materialistic and secure life alone that the Machiavellian prince promises. First, it needs to be pointed out that Machiavelli also seems to see there is of little value for a prince to pursue materialistic desires, unless it serves a bigger purpose, such as the acquirement of ââ¬Å"abundance of either men or moneyâ⬠serves to ââ¬Å"put together an adequate army and fight a battle against whoever comes to attack them. â⬠Machiavelli seems to imply that a prince seeks not just power, but also seeks to be more glorious, excellent, and virtuous than ordinary men. He states that as a commander, a prince should have ââ¬Å"no other object, nor any other thought, nor take anything else as his art but that of war and its order and disciplineâ⬠; and when a prince ââ¬Å"have thought more of amenities than of arms, [he has] lost [his state]. â⬠This seems to imply that a prince should not seek trivial contentment, but only that of commanders; and as a leader, a prince should desire to be esteemed, feared, and loved, and avoid to be viewed as ââ¬Å"variable, light, effeminate, pusillanimous, irresolute. Hence, Machiavelli seems to say that even though not everyone has virtues, thus, those who do will rise and become princes while the rest will be ruled over, it is desirable that one should aspire to become a prince, seek virtues, prove oneââ¬â¢s excellence with his prudence. Socrates, hence, also seems to agree with Machiavelli that one should seek more in life than the satisfaction of oneââ¬â¢s instinctive desires. However, Socrate s disagrees with Machiavelli on two points. First, Socrates disagrees that only a few has virtues but everyone is capable of achieving more in life but rather everyone is capable of pursuing virtues. Second, he believes that there is only the ââ¬Å"virtue of reasonâ⬠that, unlike others that ââ¬Å"arenââ¬â¢t there beforehand but are added later by habit and practice,â⬠has always been there intrinsically inside of everyone. He states that this virtue ââ¬Å"never loses its power but is either useful and beneficial or useless and harmful, depending on the way it is turned. â⬠Socrates, thus, might argue with Machiavelli that the virtues that he assigns for the perfect prince are derivatives of this single virtue of reason, which is ââ¬Å"forced to serve evil ends. â⬠Hence, the perfect prince is capable of horrid things, but still very clever to maintain his image. Socrates perhaps can conclude that the prince described by Machiavelli is a case where the virtue of reason is turned to the wrong way. Thus, Socrates reasons that everyone is capable of pursuing this virtue of reason, and hence, capable of greatness, but they need guidance and education to ââ¬Å"[turn] around from darkness to light. â⬠Machiavelli then might agree that everyone might be capable of greatness, but he still disagrees as to why any person with the virtue of reason should not become a prince to dominate others, but agree to be governed by the philosopher-king. Now, assume that Socratesââ¬â¢ model of the human soul is correct and sufficient; it might give an answer to this problem. Socrates reasons that a humanââ¬â¢s soul consists of three parts, a human who represents our virtue of reasons, a lion which represents our beastly power and aggression, also courage and nobility, and a multicolored beast with ââ¬Å"a ring of many heads that it can grow and change at willâ⬠which represents our various desires, ââ¬Å"some from gentle, some from savage animals. With the previously established argument that Machiavelli and Socrates may agree that the satisfaction of materialistic desires holds little value, hence, the scenario that the multicolored beast is in control can be eliminated, and so, the argument may be narrowed down to Machiavelli wanting the noble and courageous lion to dominate, while Socrates remains that the rational human should be in control. The initial description of the lion seems to match the dominant characteristics of that of the Machiavellian prince; however, as Machiavelli says himself, a prince needs both natures of man and beast, since ââ¬Å"one without the other is not lasting. â⬠The prince, hence, is still governed by both the man with virtue of reasons and the lion with courage and nobility. He uses the virtues of reason to acquire other virtues to become a prince, but he is still driven by the instinct of the noble lion to achieve glory and conquer others. As the human is the ââ¬Å"best part of [a human soul]â⬠it is still best to have the human part be in control over the bestial parts, because then, the ââ¬Å"entire soul settles into its best nature, acquires moderation, justice, and reason. â⬠Thus, people should seek to achieve this state of the soul where the human part is in control, it then takes care of the multicolored beast ââ¬Å"as farmer does his animalsâ⬠, and tends to the lion so that ââ¬Å"the lionââ¬â¢s nature [becomes] his ally. This form of goodness of the soul is ââ¬Å"the last thing to be seen, and it is reached only with difficulty. â⬠Hence, the people will want and need the help of a philosopher-king. Since ââ¬Å"a democratic man like a city ruled by a democracy, and similarly with the othersâ⬠, the life under the rule of a philosopher-king will be similarly to the life which the philosopher-king rules himself. He will ensure by laws or otherwise, that his subject citizens will b e ââ¬Å"the slave of [the philosopher-king] who has a divine ruler within himself. A philosopher-king does not wish to enslave the people to exploit from them, but only to help nurture and bring out the best of the people. When the people are ready, are equipped with ââ¬Å"guardians and ruler similar to [the philosopher-king],â⬠then the people will be set free. It will be ideal for everyone to be ruled by his own divine reason within himself. In conclusion, it is better to be ruled by a philosopher-king because one should goes after the values that the philosopher-king promotes. That is, one should find the virtue of reasons, and by the power of this virtue and the help of the philosopher-king, pursue the ideal balance of the soul, where the human part governs his consciousness and reins in the beasts. The Machiavellian prince is still governed by both the lion and the human, and he lets the people indulge themselves in their desires, hence, the prince is not the best choice of ruler, for himself and for his people alike.

She sympathised with him as he seemed like he was longing for love and companionship. Stanza 2 She regrets that she had not listened to the advice to be wary of man who like to flirt and who only look for pleasure. She should not have compromised on her principles as well. If she had been more careful, she would not be wondering about his betrayal, how and why it happened as well as how and why she let it happen to her.Stanza 3 Here is an advice to young girls out there. Make sure that being nice to another person means to be pleasant, friendly and kind. One need not be intimate with someone else in order to be considered a nice person. Take heed of this advice and one will not be taken advantage of, although one may fall in love more than once. Elements of the poem Theme The main theme of the poem is the exploration of human feelings through the sharing of the experiences. The pesona has gone through a bad experience of being betrayed in love and her experience is being related by the author. At the same time, the author is also giving advice on how to avoid getting into the same predicament as the pesona. Another theme in the poem is the betrayal of a young girlââ¬â¢s love. She had believed that the man was sincere as he was able to fool her with his ââ¬Ëquiet eyes ââ¬â¢. As a result, she gave her love wholeheartedly to him, only to find out later that he had ulterior motives.Deception is also a theme in the poem. The man had deceptive eyes, but the girl was so infatuated with him that she did not realize his hidden agendas. The man was only interested in getting into bed with her and nothing else. The poem also revolves around the theme of meaningful relationships. The author advises young women to be careful when starting a relationship. They should make sure that the relationship is based on true love and not merely physical attraction.

Mr. Mohammad Soeparno, President Director of Garuda Indonesia Airways III. Major Policy Statement Garuda Indonesia Airways, the largest airline in the Southern Hemisphere, is a provider of air transportation and a guarantor of quality service that supports the success of the development of transportation and tourism, aiming to be one of the worldââ¬â¢s top airlines in the year 2000. IV. Current Operational Plans Management 1. The management made an assessment of the companyââ¬â¢s strengths and weaknesses relative to the environmental opportunities and threats. In order to respond to the increasing uncertainty in the environment in which Garuda operates, the management found it necessary to adopt a ââ¬Å"strategic thinkingâ⬠in making plans to reach the following goals: 1. To be one of the worldââ¬â¢s top 10; 2. to give excellent service; to be more professional in commercial air transportation; and 4. To increase finance condition by reaching 5% profit before tax. 2. Panca Program ââ¬â five point programs in order to reach their objectives. Panca Program contained the following elements: 1. To increase fleet utilization; 2. To improve employeesââ¬â¢ welfare; 3. To improve service; 4. To implement the national civil aviation policy as decreed by the Minister of Communication; and 5. To boost tourism. 3. In 1985, Garuda introduced service to the U. S. under an interchange agreement with Continental Airlines of the U. S but Garudaââ¬â¢s interchange agreement with Continental also came to an end in 1986. This gave rise to the involvement of two or more airlines in the same flight serving a particular route. The airlines involved share of the revenues, the costs, or the profit generated by the joint service. 4. Garudaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"strife doctrineâ⬠which means consistent in reaching ââ¬Å"national objectives. â⬠5. Garuda Indonesia was classified as a PT (PERSERO) issued by the government of Indonesia, Garuda assumed a dual role as ââ¬Å"agent of developmentâ⬠and as a ââ¬Å"profit-seekingâ⬠enterprise. Marketing 1. To promote Garudaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Executive Class,â⬠Garuda ran full-page color advertisements in overseas business newspapers and magazine featuring photography of different but equally satisfied-looking business passengers (all Caucasians), complete with their identification and testimonials. 2. Garudaââ¬â¢s advertising looked much more aggressive than ever before. Garuda also ran a series of advertisements capitalizing the new livery. The introduction of the new convenience in purchasing Garuda tickets using American Express cards in November 1986 was also widely advertised. When a passenger subsequently wished to pay with an American Express card, however, the girl at Garuda sales counter at Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta succeeded to discourage the use of the credit card. Another series of advertisement appeared to promote international cargo service, apparently to show the companyââ¬â¢s support to the governmentââ¬â¢s campaign to boost Indonesiaââ¬â¢s non-oil exports. 3. The logo of Garuda Indonesia Airways was changed. The new logo used ââ¬Å"Garuda Indonesiaâ⬠instead of ââ¬Å"Garuda Indonesia Airwaysâ⬠and the whole livery from red-and-white dominated colors to different shades of blue. Garuda, the bird carrying the God Vishnu in the Hindu mythology, was made to look more like the exotic bird of paradise in the new logo. The passengers were pleasantly surprised by the cleaner appearance of the aircraftââ¬â¢s exterior interior which came about from the re-painting and from changing the upholstery. 4. Garudaââ¬â¢s souvenirs for first class and business class were better designed and there was already and expanded wine list on Garudaââ¬â¢s international flights. 5. To help promote tourism, Garuda introduced ââ¬Å"Visit Indonesia Air Passâ⬠under 3 different packages. The 5-city package cost 300 US Dollars, the 10-city package cost 400 US Dollars, and 35-city package cost 500 US Dollars. Eligibility was restricted to foreign nationals and the purchase must be made outside of Asia with the exception of Japan. Holiday packages inclusive of accommodation, transfers, tours, or meals were also available. 6. Garuda has sales channels distributed to big and potential cities. Finance 1. Mr. Wiweko Suponoââ¬â¢s (former President Director of Garuda before Mr. Lumenta) management reported a net loss of 46 million US Dollars for the year ended December 1983, and when replaced by Mr. Lumenta, itââ¬â¢s management inherited foreign debts amounting close to 1.3 billion US Dollars at 12% interest per annum and in the words of then Commercial Director of that time, Mr. Soeparno, ââ¬Å"a weak system in every aspect. â⬠2. The construction cost of the training center for Garudaââ¬â¢s Human Resource Development reported by the company was 31 billion rupiah. Twelve months later, Garuda signed a purchase contract for a DC-19 simulator costing 11. 5 million US Dollars finance d through an EXIM Bank soft loan. Operations 1. Garudaââ¬â¢s business class was given a new emphasis to attract more passengers paying the full fare. It has been promoted as ââ¬Å"Executive Classâ⬠and it has become the premiere class on flights aboard the Airbus A-300 and the DC-9. Garuda has even relocated the business-class section on its Boeing-747 flights from the small upper deck to the more spacious main deck in front normally reserved for first-class passengers. The first-class section has since occupied the upper deck. 2. There was a resumption of serving snacks and soft drinks on Garudaââ¬â¢s short domestic flights to give the passengers a bit of refreshment and because of this, instead of 30 more passengers, Garuda managed to attract about 200, luring them from its domestic competitors. 3. To further improve Garudaââ¬â¢s service to its passengers flying from overseas on the big Boeing 747 bound for Bali, Garuda introduced in-flight immigration inspection on its Tokyo-Jakarta-Bali flights. The priority was given to Bali-bound flights because the terminal building at the airport in Denpasar, Bali was too small to give shelter to the hundreds of arriving passengers queuing for immigration clearance. 4. For Garudaââ¬â¢s improvement of their fleet deployment, Garuda added new routes and increased frequently on the existing ones. In 1985, Garuda introduced service to the U. S.under an interchange agreement with Continental Airlines of the U. S. A Garuda DC-10 was used for the operation and Garudaââ¬â¢s crew flew the plane between Jakarta and Guam via Bali and Biak in Irian Jaya. Then, in Guam Continentalââ¬â¢s crew took over the plane for the continuation of the journey to Los Angeles via Honolulu. Aircraft deployment was further increased by leasing another o f Garudaââ¬â¢s DC-19 to Continental. Garudaââ¬â¢s interchange agreement with Continental came to an end in 1986 and instead, Garuda began serving Guam from Jakarta via Bali and Manado once a week flying a DC-10. Joint operations with other airlines were subsequently introduced to include Singapore-Bali with Singapore Airlines (twice weekly), Kuala Lumpur-Bali with Malaysian Airlines (twice weekly), Hong Kong-Bali with Cathay Pacific (twice weekly), and Manila-Jakarta with Philippines Airlines (twice weekly). 5. Garuda added a new service from Jakarta to Frankfurt, giving the airline 8 flights a week from Jakarta. Two years later the number increased to 10. In addition, Garuda introduced once a week service from Bali to Amsterdam as a joint operation with K. L. M.and from Bali to Frankfurt, giving the airline a total of 12 Boeing-747 flights a week from Indonesia to Europe by the end of 1987. Although the past management under Mr. Lumenta hardly added new destinations in the Middle East, Asia and Australia, they did add capacity to the existing routes by either increasing frequency or using a larger aircraft, or a combination thereof. Garuda did not add capacity significantly in its domestic operation linking 35 cities. Mr. Soeparno explained that such policy decision was intentional in view of the limited growth opportunities in the domestic market since the crash of oil boom. Human Resources 1. The salaries of Garudaââ¬â¢s flight personnel were increased by 60% to 70%, the purpose of this decision was to give moral support to the troops. The staffs were changed, with high spirit. Morale was improved and with it so as service. 2. Garuda has brought on their flights Indonesian immigration officers and Japanese stewardess in addition to their regular cabin crew on their introduction of in-flight immigration inspection on its Tokyo-Jakarta-Bali flights. 3. Human resource development received new emphasis. A state-of-the-art training center on 64 hectares of land near the international airport of Jakarta was opened in November 1986. Among the facilities available were a B-747 simulator, and 2 mock-up cabins. Garuda had on its payroll 600 pilots, 1,500 cabin attendants, and 700 maintenance mechanics. V. Statement of the Problem How will Mr Mohammad Soeparno implement a better system improvement and enhance Garuda Indonesia Airwaysââ¬â¢ ability to deal with the challenges it may face and during his term and beyond? VI. Statement of Objectives Short term 1. To give excellent air transportation service and increase fleet utilization. 2. To continue its international flights as long as it does not interfere with the efforts to increase domestic schedules. 3. To increase finance condition by reaching 5% profit before tax. Long term 1. To make Garuda Indonesian Airways be one of the worldââ¬â¢s top 10 airlines. 2. To be able to recover all the net losses and debts inherited from the past administrations. 3. To be more competitive internationally. VII. SWOT Analysis Strengths 1. Garuda Indonesia monopolizes the use of jets. 2. Garuda has many kinds of aircrafts to be used according demand, landing trip condition, distance and flight operation. 3. Garuda has an Indonesian graphic situation which needs air transportation. 4. It has product line: First Executive or Business, Economy Classes; so that customers are given alternatives to choose their class flights. 5. It has product diversifications: caterings, hotels. These products support the main product, that is, the airline service. 6. It has sales channels distributed to big and potential cities. 7. Indonesiaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"National Resourcesâ⬠which support business/non-business activities in Indonesia. 8. Strife doctrine which means consistent in reaching ââ¬Å"National Objectives. â⬠Weaknesses 1. Systems in all aspects: sales preparation, flight, supervisory. 2. The quality of pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight services which are still low. 3. The biggest international segment is low yield. 4. Spare parts and other aircraft equipment are still imported; this needs longer time. 5. The companyââ¬â¢s organization is still unsteady. This situation makes organizational behaviour incompetent in supporting the company. Opportunities 1. Political will of the government in tourism. 2. The still-abundant-available seat capacity. 3. Government Regulation on Tariff. 4. The strengthening currency of the countries from where tourists come to Indonesia. 5. The better condition of the worldââ¬â¢s economy. 6. The progress in business climate in Indonesia. Threats 1. Protectionism from certain countries, especially in traffic rights. 2. The development of other means of transportation, especially for near-distance transportation. 3. The uncertain economic situation. 4. Technology development in aircraft manufacture. As the result of this development, the old aircrafts are no longer economical enough to be marketed. 5. The bureaucracy which still caused problems in managing company professionalism. VIII. Alternative Courses of Action 1. Mr Mohammad Soeparno could continue the successful policies of Mr. Lumenta, the former President Director of Garuda Indonesia Airways. 2. Mr Mohammad Soeparno could make his own set of policies based on his abilities and what he thinks is the better way, with the help of his own management team. 3. Mr. Mohammad Soeparno could IX. Analysis of Alternatives 1. Mr Mohammad Soeparno could enhance Garuda Indonesia Airwaysââ¬â¢ ability to deal with the challenges it may face during his term and beyond by continuing the successful policies of Mr. Lumenta, the former President Director of Garuda Indonesia. Airways. Advantage: Under Mr. Lumentaââ¬â¢s management, Mr. Soeparno was thereof very pleased to see the company making a profit for the first time in more than a decade, to the tune of a modest rupiah 300 million. This result confirmed Mr. Soeparnoââ¬â¢s confidence in the effectiveness of the policies adopted by Mr. Lumenta upon the latterââ¬â¢s appointment as President Director of Garuda in 1984. Mr. Soeparno as the President Director of Garuda could continue all of these and at the same time set all of his new policies that could go into the current policies. It would be safe if Mr. Lumenta use all the current policies that made Garuda successful. It doesnââ¬â¢t mean that if the leader has changed, the policies will also follow especially if the policies of the last leadership were good enough or the best way the company had to be successful. He may just continue some, change some and add some. Disadvantage: The disadvantage of this alternative is that all the board of directors, shareholders. Stockholders, employees and everyone under his management may think that Mr. Soeparno cannot manage the airlines in his own way because he would just be doing what Mr. Lumenta have done in his administration. They may lose confidence in him and might pressure Mr. Lumenta to do new set of policies, which may be not good enough for the company. 2. Mr Mohammad Soeparno could make his own set of policies based on his abilities and what he thinks is the better way, with the help of his own management team. Advantage: Mr. Soeparno who is a part of Garuda for a long time already knows the company well. He can see what to do and what not to do so he will be able to set new and better policies for the company. In fact, he was the Commercial Vice President before he was inaugurated as the new President Director. He will not be trusted to be the new President Director if he doesnââ¬â¢t have the ability to make it a better one. Disadvantage: It could be very risky to set new policies again after all of those net losses in the past and it may extinguish the success Garuda is currently experiencing. Setting new policies may involve different kinds of spending Garudaââ¬â¢s money depending on what policy Mr. Soeparno is going to implement. And spending may lead again to net losses especially if this change of policy will not be effective. It is always safe to spend less that spend more if you are still not sure of the outcome a certain action may give. 3. Advantage: Disadvantage: X. Decision Statement Mr Mohammad Soeparno could enhance Garuda Indonesia Airwaysââ¬â¢ ability to deal with the challenges it may face during his term and beyond by continuing the successful policies of Mr. Lumenta, the former President Director of Garuda Indonesia. This alternative was chosen because Mr. Soeparno being a memberof Mr. Lumentaââ¬â¢s management team for a long time, had the opportunity to involve himself with the management in its efforts to develop and implement new strategies to turn around the airline, which posted a net loss of 7 million US Dollars into profitability. He was thereof very pleased to see the company making a profit for the first time in more than a decade, to the tune of a modest rupiah 300 million. This result confirmed Mr. Soeparnoââ¬â¢s confidence in the effectiveness of the policies adopted by Mr. Lumenta upon the latterââ¬â¢s appointment as President Director of Garuda in 1984. Mr. Soeparno as the President Director of Garuda could continue all of these and at the same time set all of his new strategies that could go into the current policies. It could be very risky to set new policies again after all of those successes but of course; Mr. Soeparno can always adjust and change all of these when the situation tells it to do so. Alternatives 2 and 3 were not chosen because XI. Implementation Program Short range 1. Review the policies under Mr. Lumentaââ¬â¢s term and determine which of these would still be fitting and useful under the administration of the new President Director Mr. Soeparno. The policies under Mr. Lumentaââ¬â¢s management may serve as a guide in the present administration to continuously ensure the success of Garuda. 2. Mr. Lumenta should form a reliable and trustworthy management team that will help him execute and monitor the implementation of all the policies in the most effective way. 3. Status quo ââ¬â Mr. Soeparno could simply do nothing with the existing policies and just let the existing policies be as it is since it has helped a lot in the success of Garuda. Long range 1. If there are policies that should be replaced because it is not fitting and useful in the present time, this is the time that Mr. Soeparno could set his new policies that would be suitable for the current situation. 2. 3. XII. Proposed Operational Plans Management 1. The Panca Program of the past administration was satisfied and it would be better of Mr. Soeparno could make another program that could guide him and Garuda to aim for the best after its recovery. It could be called as, ââ¬Å"A Better Panca Programâ⬠or he could change its name. This program may include goals more advanced than the previous Panca Program, example: ââ¬Å"to give a high quality serviceâ⬠or may continue some of its goals like to increase fleet utilization and to help boost tourism. 2. It can also be helpful if they will have more partnerships with different bodies of companies for them to have a lot of associates that may help them in their fleet utilization, publicity, better technology and etc. , it can be like what they have done with having an agreement with Continental Airlines of the U. S. Marketing 1. Garuda was said to have a lack in visibility and it would be better if they will add their publicity through promoting Garuda by having more advertisements, not just in print but it can be in television and radio. They would just have to allot a budget for this and they can do it now especially that they are already recovering. 2. Garuda could add some more promos because most of the tourists and travellers of today are already looking after this. There can be holiday promos, like for Christmas, summer, Valentines and many others. Finance 1. Garuda can have loans with a certain bank, or it is better if they will have a partnership with this bank to help them fund their different activities regarding their system improvement and fleet utilization. But Garuda should always be careful about this because they already have losses and debts in the past year. They can hire better people that would handle their finance department and Mr. Soeparno as well should be very vigilant and watchful in this case so Garuda can be safe and be out of all the losses and debts it may procure if any unfavourable situation happens. Operations 1. Garuda should also concentrate on having a technology enhancement. It is important that they resolve their computerized reservation system because this system is very helpful for passengers because they would not have to go to Garuda personally and they can just do it into their homes and offices. It will be a big help especially now that travellers are always looking after comfort and having transactions at a very low cost. 2. Garuda should also have their aircrafts be at their best condition, always. So they should really allocate money for its maintenance and if possible have their own maintenance for their wide-bodied aircrafts to lessen the cost it procures when it has to be done overseas. Their aircrafts are really important so they should give number 1 priority to this. Human Resources 1. One of Garudaââ¬â¢s goals to improve their employeeââ¬â¢s welfare, and as now it is just safe to still continue giving the salary that they are currently having because the past administration just increased it 60% to 70%. Garuda should just concentrate in their human resource development by having continuous trainings for all their employees especially the pilots. XIII. Multinational Companies and Global Human Resource Strategies Coursework
Multinational Companies and Global Human Resource Strategies - Coursework Example The expansion into new business environments across borders presents massive human resource challenges as a business must ensure cultural and managerial opportunity but also consider the needs of the new market. Various international human resource management and staffing policies have been developed to ensure that the internationalization and expansion programs are not affected. Coke Mexico has embraced a number of international staffing policies most of which were adopted from the pioneer years of their entry into the Mexican market. At coke Mexico, a mixture of different international staffing policies has been adopted to ensure smooth operation of the company and continuity of its culture and business practices. Such staffing policies include ethnocentric, polycentric, geocentric and regiocentric staffing approach all of which are governed by different principles. This paper will evaluate some of the staffing strategies that coke Mexico has adopted over the years and also review some of the available policies that it can be adapted to ensure continuity and smooth operations. The paper will also provide recommendations on the order of strategic preferences that the company can adapt based on the Mexican situation and business environment. The world has witnessed rapid internationalization and globalization over the last decade and this has been attributed to the search for new markets and global influence. The expansion of a business entity beyond the domestic boundary while maintaining the commitment to the local market calls for the adoption of complex business structures and strategies (Cooke, 2003). The effective management of human resources is one common determinant of internationalization success and the integration of foreign cultures into the operations of theà business.

The Enimga Machine Scholarship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
The Enimga Machine - Scholarship Essay Example The paper tells that with the evolution of science and technology the meaning and essence of warfare and combat changed a great deal. War was no more confined to conventional bloodshed and mass killings alone, in fact now it encircled attacks on the ideological and intellectual fronts as well. Enigma machine was one such invention that was created to outpace the competition in the field of communication and message transmission using state- of-the-art technology. Enigma machine was a consequent of the advancements and inroads made by the scientists and engineers in the field of wireless communications in the early 20th century. This new mode of communication revolutionized the way traditional communication used to take place. Now getting the message across to geographic regions was becoming easier and viable for commercial as well as military purposes. Enigma machine was a modern solution to the tedious and time consuming process of encipherment. Traditionally confidential messages t o be transmitted from one office or landmark to another were encrypted between the locations. Cryptography was the putting down of a message in coded form known as encoding or encryption. The process of traditional encipherment also entailed the decryption or decoding of the encrypted message received by the receiver. The sender and receiver both used the same code book to encode and decode the message send and received respectively. The encrypted message was always in the form of alphabets or letters that were neither readable by anyone nor interpretable without following a proper and distinct procedure. The information that was hidden under the code was known as plaintext and the coded or encrypted information was referred to as cipher text.2 Need is the mother of invention and it was soon realized that the time consuming process must be replaced by an efficient one to make encipherment faster and more effective. The evolution in the mechanism started in the early 20th century

Firewall Technology (Network Security) Research Paper
Firewall Technology (Network Security) - Research Paper Example Security requirements have substantially changed recently. Traditionally, securing a system was provided by preventing access (physical and ethically) to the secure system. However, with the introduction of computer technology, there was a need to develop automated security appliances for protecting the network and data of an organization. Due to vast rise in threats, vulnerabilities, hacking and cyber crimes, firewalls become mandatory as the first choice to implement for securing the network and data for every computer network. Firewalls Computer Security is the general term for a set of resources designed to help protect data and ruin the efforts of hackers. Moreover, it is a set of measures to protect data during transmission over a set of interconnected computer systems. Hence, security is a set measures for deterrence, prevention, detection and correction of security threats that can damage or divulge information either locally or when transmitted. Hence, certain security mecha nisms that are designed to detect, prevent and restore security after an attack. Consequently, many network appliances are invented to secure a network. The most popular network security appliance that is used in almost every small or corporate network to provide security is a firewall. Firewall is defined as ââ¬Å"a combination of hardware, software, and procedures that controls access to an intranet. Firewalls help to control the information that passes between an intranet and the Internet. A firewall can be simple or complex, depending on how an organization decides to control its Internet traffic. It may, for example, be established to limit Internet access to e-mail only, so that no other types of information can pass between the intranet and the Internetâ⬠(Firewall.2007). Firewalls are network security devices that are categorized in hardware-based firewalls and software-based firewalls. The hardware-based firewalls are more secure, as they are not dependent on the oper ating system. On the other hand, software-based firewalls are dependent on the operating system that may demonstrate risks. The choice from these options depends on the cost as well. However, a full features firewall may protect the computer network from hackers or cyber criminals. It will detect, block and quarantine viruses and malicious codes that tries to enter in the network. Moreover, configuration on the local area network demonstrates a graphical user interface to ensure that each preventive measure is active and running (Agnitum outpost persona firewall pro 2.0.2004). Benefits Constant monitoring of security is achievable via a firewall implementation. As all modifications and logs are stored in a firewall, that are divergent of distribution on hosts on the network. Firewall also provides the protocol-filtering capability as it filters protocols and services associated with them in order to secure them from exploitation. Moreover, firewall hides inbound communication of the network from the outbound network that is also called a wide area network (ADVANTAGES OF FIREWALL). Furthermore, the use of computer networks and communication lines require protecting data during transmission. In addition, firewalls also provide centralized management for the network. This is an ultimate advantage for the network security staff within an organization as the management and

Shortfalls and Benefits of Vegetarian Diet Essay - 1
Shortfalls and Benefits of Vegetarian Diet - Essay Example In this light, differences are bound to occur, thus, the need for this paper to compare and analyze the differences between the movie and the book. In the book, Brunoââ¬â¢s father is portrayed as a man with a strong personality and character with little to compromise in order to fulfill Nazi ambition. This is seen with his promotion to the position of a commandant, which prompted that he and his family migrate to Auschwitz for work purposes. In this place, he is a senior officer in the Nazi movement who is in charge of the detention camp where the Jews, enemies of the Germans based on the German conception, were tortured and exterminated by burning. However, the film portrays Brunoââ¬â¢s father as a different character altogether in light of his concerns and attitudes towards the paper. This is bearing in mind that the film focuses on a number of aspects aimed at bringing him out as a better man than the book does. In this case, Brunoââ¬â¢s father is featured as a family man and parent whose values are well laid when he is opposed to the concept of raising his two children close to the detention center. This is portrayed with the constant arguments that arise between him and his wife where he argues the reason that the children have to grow is because; he is there for work purposes. ... This is also shown in her arguments with her husband on how to raise their children in such an environment near the detention camp. This is especially considering how naive, impressionable, and perceptive the two youngsters are, and for this reason, she suggests that they move back to Berlin for the sake of raising their two children. On the other hand, the movie portrays her as being the emotional parent, who shares in the concerns for her children and those of the Jews in the concentration camps. This is seen with the sympathy she shows towards the Jews in the concentration camps and conditions, and the plight that they have to face. This is as opposed to her role in the book where the concern lies only in children and not the Jews. For this reason, the film differs from the book in that the film draws the emotion and reaction of the audience, in relation to the ethics of that which the Germans do to the Jews in the concentration camps. These appeals to the audience by making it ap pear as a disgusting deed and the level of wrongdoing questioning the moral and social thinking of the Germans. The other difference featured between the books and the film is in the details behind the facts found in the book and those found in the film. In relation to this, the book portrays the age of the two children, Shmuel and Bruno, as being aged nine years, while, the film differs. The film labels the two youngsters as being at the eight years, which is a difference of one year, which is uncalled for or whose role cannot be perceived to influence the two entities. The only difference might only be in the portrayal may be in the concept of naivety and innocence, which is more pronounced in the film than the book. This is shown by the fact that they cannot discern

Adult and embryonic stem cells-2 Thesis Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 10000 words
Adult and embryonic stem cells-2 - Thesis Example In fact, the uproar from Christian groups in the US was largely responsible for President Bushââ¬â¢s decision regarding research on human embryonic stem cells that put a ban on further production and use of hESCs, and limiting the research to existing sixty lines of hESCs. Though this consoled the priests and other religious figures in the US, this decision also received much opposition from other religious groups within US and other parts of the world. For instance, Protestants believed in the apostle that stated, ââ¬ËWe may not do evil so that good may come.ââ¬â¢ The Orthodox Christian Church argued that ââ¬Ëthe very act of killing those embryos is evil, and we may not profit from evil even to achieve a good and noble endââ¬â¢ (Waters and Cole-Turner, 2003; p.173). Islamic scripture indicating that life begins in the embryo after 40 days post fertilization has given rise to many other perspectives on embryonic stem cell research (Peterson, 2003). However, the Hindu and Buddhist beliefs are not centered around the life of embryo but on doctrines of karma (action or duty) and ahimsa (nonviolence). In connection with this, Jafari et al (2008, p. 90) point out that the intentions of donors, needs, scientistsââ¬â¢ beliefs, and the potential recipients are important factors that determine the fate of embryonic stem cell (ESC) research and its clinical applications. This article concludes that Muslims, Jews and the majority of Protestants favor ESC research from a religion perspective (see Appendix 1.1), but do have moral and ethical considerations attached to destruction of embryos. The varied religious beliefs have resulted in great debate over ESC research in multiple dimensions that have emerged from theological, ethical, and/or moral convicti ons in various parts of the world. Gotweis, Slater and Waldby (2009) argue that little evidence exists to prove

Death penalty should be abolished Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Death penalty should be abolished - Essay Example A punishment, which was put into effect in 1500 in England, was opposed by many academics in 1750. These academics included Cesare Beccaria who was the Italian jurist; Voltaire who was the French philosopher; and, Jeremy Bentham and Samuel Romilly, who were the English law reformers. They presented the argument that death penalty was the cruel form of punishing the criminals, and it is most often applied on innocent people. However, there are many counter-arguments that support the death penalty. This paper intends to juxtapose the arguments and counter-arguments regarding death penalty; and, support the statement that capital punishment or death penalty is cruel, and should be abolished. Ethics do not allow a government to take lives of its nationals. There is good number of chances that innocent lives will be put to death under this punishment, and there can be no compensation for this. It is possible that capital punishment converts to manslaughter by killing someone convicted of murder, when the murderer says that it was not murder but an inadvertent killing, such as killing in self-defense. An example is the open and shut case of James McNicol, who was put to death in December 1945. Although James did not oppose the conviction of murder; yet, after his death, Elaine Merrilees, his niece discovered that he was only guilty of manslaughter and not murder. Hence, death penalty can be understood as a violation of human or civil rights. Wrongful conviction also includes cases where people make false confessions. Such people are innocent in actual, and are penalized to death. Whether the court announces death penalty for a convict or not depends less on the criminal act and the evidences, and more on the skill of the lawyers, the financial status of the criminal, the socio-economic status, and the race and color. These factors result into biased decisions from the court, resulting in either making the real criminal escape the punishment or enforcing death penalty on to some other innocent person. This makes the whole system of death penalty illogical and heinous. However, it cannot be stated as a final decision that murderers should be given relaxation in punishment, which makes the debate of adopting or banning the capital punishment all the more daunting. Death penalty has deepened its roots strongly in many countries, and the victims are often Hispanics and the minorities, who are killed due to racial discrimination. It would have been somewhat acceptable if the punishment was for everyone, regardless of what race, color, or ethnic group the murderer belonged to, but since most of the times racial biases come across, the situation gets worse. This also becomes the cause for hatred between different ethnic groups, and may give rise to riots and a long sequence of killings based on racial differences. Marquart, Ekland-Olson and Sorensen (86) affirm that: Rather than systematically sentencing younger minorities to death, murderers of all ra cial categories who received death tended to be younger than the larger pool of imprisoned convicted murderers- although the difference in age between Hispanics sentenced to death or those imprisoned was not statistically significant. The family of the one who is being put to capital punishment suffers very badly. Negative impacts are inflicted on their innocent minds because they have to come to terms not only with the sentence of their loved one but also with his death, and that too so cruelly. Therefore, the agony of

Gen Y group Demographic Characteristics of Gen Y In keeping with the recent market conditions, ââ¬ËGen Yââ¬â¢ people are learnt to have an enormous potential as the prospective customers for various products and/or services. The people belonging to this group have grown up in the period of economic stability and affluence which, in turn, were quite effective in bringing up constancy as well as rapid advancement in their lifestyle. Therefore, the people belonging to this generation largely desire to pursue an affluent lifestyle. These people are often monitored to be highly persuaded towards entertainment and style deciphering lesser significance concerning the monetary attributes. Thus, it can be argued that people belonging to this age group can be more effectively lured with attractive features rather than offering price concessions (Aeffect, Inc., 2000). According to the US Census Bureau, in relation to the figures published in 2000, the Gen Y group comprised people who fund amentally belonged to the age group of 5 years to 22 years, including around 70 million people, i.e. 25.9% of entire population of the nation (Aeffect, Inc., 2000). From a generalised perspective, the families of Gen Y are observed to be very much culturally diverse and lead a busy life. For instance, according to the recent statistics of US demographics, the entire population of Gen Y customers include 15% of African-American, 5% of Asian and 14% of Hispanic citizens. Consequentially, this considerable diversity has resulted in creating a significant distinctness among the buying behaviours of the consumers belonging to this segment. Thus, in order to provide complementary products to the Gen Y buyer segment, the marketers need to come up with varied offerings to meet their needs (Aeffect, Inc.,
Chinese Culture Essay Example for Free
Chinese Culture Essay The climate and temperature of China varies throughout the area of the country. Most of the country lies in the temperate belt, but the southern most part lies in the subtropical belt while the northern part is in the sub arctic belt. There is usually a lot of rain in the summer, and very little in the winter. China has the largest agricultural output in the world, while only cultivating 15% of its total area. Rice is Chinaââ¬â¢s most harvested crop, while wheat is second. China also produces potatoes, other vegetables, and some fruits. By the end of 2000, China had 633 different cities, while 13 of them had a population of two million or more. The three biggest Chinese cities are Shanghai, Beijing, and Chongqing, in that order. Hong Kong is inside China, but isnââ¬â¢t considered part of the country. Confucianism used to be the main religion in China and help shape its history. However, Buddhism has the most followers and biggest influence in China than any other religion, now. Some other major religions throughout China are Taoism, Islam, and Christianity. Most people in China, now, play sports just like us such as ping pong, soccer, and badminton. These types of sports are fairly new to China, while different types of martial arts have been around much longer than team sports. China is a communist state. This means that everything is ruled and owned by the government. There is no private ownership, and all goods are shared by the people, who are all equal. Chinese education is required and free for ages 6 ââ¬â 15, and can be continued longer if the person wants to and can afford it. Most of the jobs throughout China are related to agricultural businesses, or they do cheap labor for companies all around the world. The employment rules in China are much more relaxed than the U. S. so big corporation usually have Chinese factories make their goods for much cheaper. Stir fry is the most common cooking technique throughout China. It requires a small amount of oil in a heated pan, and the ingredients of the mea, usually vegetables and meat, are put into the pan and cooked until ready. The most used cooking tool is the wok. It is pretty much like a pan with rounded edges for stir frying. Chopsticks are by far the most used eating tools of the Chinese people, just like our forks and spoons. Chinese meals almost always have rice or noodles. The is usually vegetables in the meals, which could be many different types, such as broccoli, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, cabbage or eggplants. The meat is usually chicken, pork, or fish. Chinese meals are eaten pretty much at the same time as out meals. Breakfast is in the morning, lunch in the afternoon, and dinner is at night. There are much unusual eating etiquettes that must be followed in China. One is that your tea can never be empty. The host will always be refilling their guestsââ¬â¢ cups, and the guests must tap their cup on the table as a showing of thankfulness. Another eating etiquette is that, when out with a group of people, you must order an even number or plates, even if there is an odd number of people, because odd numbers symbolize death. Australia Country Risks Essay Example for Free
Australia Country Risks Essay The overall performance of Australia in world economic outlook is generally one of the most stable. Because of the well planned course of running the economy, the Australian government has been maintaining a good level of growth among the Asia Pacific countries. However, it is also important to see some of the risks involved if one wishes to invest in the Australian market. The first aspect in strategic planning is to identify the political risks. Apparently, the political risks in the country can only be identified in terms of effectiveness. The implementation of different laws is at least better in Australia than any of its neighbors. In a general scale, it is one of the most stable political units in the world. Although some corruption incidences have been reported previously, there is still a very good control of the government to combat such problems (McKeever). The legal risks involved in Australia are also very minimal. Since the Australian laws are basically made of Federal Parliament directives, there are very little chances of having a biased law towards a particular party. The laws are ratified by the three system political approval such as the executive, legislative and judicial segments. Basically, Australian Laws are for the common man which reduces the possibility of having extreme unwarranted consequences of biased judgments. Lastly, it is also important to note he regulatory risks in a particular country. In Australia, this risk is also very minimal because of the previous financial deregulation processes ratified in 1983 by making the Australian dollar float in the international foreign market (Wikipedia, 2007). This served as the primary attractive factor for most investors who wish to get a deregulated instrument for investment. References McKeever. N. D. The McKEEVER Institute of Economic Policy Analysis. History Of Entrepreneurship In Mauritius Business Essay
History Of Entrepreneurship In Mauritius Business Essay Several measures and policies have been implemented since independence regarding SMEs, the priority of the government of maximizing social welfare has been considered through the creation and promotion of entrepreneurial businesses. The origins of SMEs in Mauritius begins in the 1960s when Mauritius was experiencing a timid industrialization change-over with the main objective of supplying the local market with imported goods and helping the country to gain a certain autonomy. At that time, the government was encouraging the production of different types of commodities such as manufacturing of blades, electrical bulbs, batteries, soap, welding and steel work for construction, refining edible oils, plastic industry, food canning, industrial poultry breeding, yogurt manufacturing, biscuits, shoes and so on for the domestic market. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry established the Small Scale Industry Unit (SSIU) in 1976 which in 1983 became the Small Industry Development Organizati on (SIDO), the primary aim of such company was to provide general advice and guidance to small businesses and in 1988, the Small Scale Industry (SSI) experienced a true change-over through the presentation of the Small Scale Industries Act. This act promoted the development of the SSI by adopting a legal definition of SSI, voluntary registration of SSI, duty exemption on production equipment and the setting up of an advisory board. The Industrial Expansion Act 1993 consisted of the SMIDO Act which was considered as the next landmark in promoting entrepreneurship in Mauritius, the idea was to establish a framework for consolidating, expanding and enhancing the competitiveness and developing a SME sector. The government implemented a Ministry of SMEs in December 2003 and two years after the Small Enterprises and Handicraft Development Authority (SEHDA) was created following the union of the SMIDO and the National Handicraft Promotion Agency (NHPA). The SEHDA main objective was to prom ote a more effective and efficient use of available resources allocated to the entrepreneurial sector in Mauritius. The SEHDA Act 2010 was replaced by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development (SMEDA) Act and this was the latest development with regards to the SME policy framework in Mauritius. The SMEDA nowadays works under the aegis of the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives and represent one of the most well-known organizations promoting entrepreneurship in the Mauritian economy. Definition of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship Who is an entrepreneur? The term entrepreneur has been defined in various forms over the past years based on professional experience of individuals or based on observations and researches made to understand what an entrepreneur is. According to the Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon (1725), an entrepreneur is someone who accepts to pay a certain price for a commodity (for instance materials) and to resell it at another price thus deciding about the practical use of resources while consequently admitting the risk of enterprise. The French economist Jean-Baptiste Say (1803) stated that a business person is an economic agent who regroups all factors of production- land, labor, and capital and produces a product as such shifting economic resources out of an area of lower productivity to a higher one. The American management consultant Peter Drucker (1964) stated that an entrepreneur is one who looks for and respond to change, thus enjoying opportunities by converting a source into resource. Another defini tion implied that an entrepreneur is an individual starting a new business in a new market where no one before has started business, this was stated by W.B. Gartner in 1985. Thus it can be seen that the definition of an entrepreneur varies according to time and according to observations and perceptions of people who considers it as mainly individual making money by accepting to take risks to achieve his/her goal. But in order to understand clearly the concept, a simpler but direct definition should be considered and as such, an entrepreneur is an individual who decides to take the risks of managing a business and especially manipulating factors of production such as land, labor and capital for the sake of making profit. The main characteristics that an entrepreneur should possess are enthusiasm, intelligence, creativity, determination, courage to take risks, communication skills, human relation abilities, business secrecy, administrative ability, ability to manage pressure, leading skills, technical knowledge, problem-solving skills and so on. Entrepreneurs are classified based mainly on Functional characteristics being innovative, imitative, skeptical, cautious, or resistant to change. Development angle- being eager for expansion, survival, efficient, or concentrated only on local trading. Types of entrepreneurial business- manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, or service business. Nine personality types of entrepreneurs- being an improver, advisor, highly qualified, highly creative, visionary, analyst, optimistic, leader, determined. Types of motivation- motivated by profit, rewards, and self-fulfillment. Types of area- urban or rural entrepreneurs Types of gender- male or women entrepreneurs. What is entrepreneurship? The term entrepreneurship has also been defined by some researchers, economist and consultants where different meanings have been developed in order to clarify what it is really. According to the economist Joseph Schumpeter in the 1930s, entrepreneurship employs the concept of gale of creative destruction where past innovations on the market are replaced by new ideas thus implementing new concepts for boosting economic growth. The two American economists Peter Drucker (1970) and Frank H Knight (1921) stated that entrepreneurship deals with taking risks for the sake of making money , the acts of free enterprise is often subjected to no guarantee that the individual will be able to challenges the market uncertainties. Entrepreneurship is considered to be a major driver of economic growth for a country according to the American economist David B. Audretsch, in Mauritius for instance, SMEs re greatly participating in the development of the country, especially in reducing poverty and unem ployment. But for now, let us define what entrepreneurship is really. It is the process of increasing business interests by adopting creativity and innovation in a way to set up an enterprise. It is the action of an individual involve in minimizing the use of resources and taking risks in order to generate profits. In Mauritius, free enterprise is usually referred to as Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) where a small enterprise is defined as a business generating an annual turnover of around 10 million rupees and medium enterprise is defined as a business having an annual turnover of not more than 50 million rupees. The SMEDA in collaboration with the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives aims at promoting emergence and competitiveness of SMEs, advising the Ministry regarding how to control the SMEs sector and implementing support programmes. http://www.sbmgroup.mu/images/653_200_sme.gif Incentives for entrepreneurship For the past decades, there have been many incentives and supports given to enterprises for the promotion of the SME sector in Mauritius. Nemean Stadium :: essays papers
Nemean Stadium Based on Legend, approximately around 776 BCE, Koroibos crossed the finish line at the altar of Zeus and was crowned the first winner in Olympic history. Thus was the beginning of the ancient phenomenon of the Olympic Games. A time where all war would come to a pause as men would test their valor against fellow man in peaceful physical competition. This competition was partaken in stadiums at select locations. These men were considered elite athletes and representative of many men. This made the games important in more ways than competition. They were also political, social and a major source of pride within ancient Greece. But these Olympic games only came around every four years, so others followed. Along with the Olympic games three others joined forming the Panhellenic athletic festivals. They were the Pythian, Isthmian, and Nemean games. The sites for these games grew in extravagance as well as popularity over time and in turn the stadiums the games were to be held in also grew in extravagance. The stadium at Nemea was particularly one of extravagance and prestige. The University of California at Berkley has done a great deal for the Nemean site in the past 25 years. They have uncovered a stadium dated circa 330 BCE along with a tunnel, which is said to have been an athlete entrance to the stadium. Extensive study of the Nemean stadium and tunnel has been done and the site is well documented. The impacts of such a great archaeological find is wonderful and has inspired many to even reenact the infamous Nemean Games. Through basic review of fact and study the following will briefly detail the findings of the stadium at Nemea and its tunnel. The site at Nemea had many visitors, known to have started as early as 1766, excavating parts mostly in search of treasures from the Sanctuary of Zeus. The earliest mention of the stadium was from Colonel William Leake, approximately during the 18th century, from where he located the stadium. Unfortunately no real excavation was done until 1973 when the University of Berkley began a large scale dig under the advisory of the American School of Classical Studies, Athens and the guidance of Stephen G Miller. The investigation began an extensive yearly excavation from 1974- 1983 and since then many smaller projects have steadily occurred. The Tragic Tale of Ophelia and Hamlet Essay -- GCSE English Literature
The Tragic Tale of Ophelia and Hamletà à à à à à à à à à à The common problem of lack of communication has plagued couples since the beginning of time. The relationship Hamlet and Ophelia share in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Hamlet, is no more immune to these human tendencies. Throughout the drama, many misunderstandings cloud their relationship. Unspoken problems and pressures within Opheliaââ¬â¢s and Hamletââ¬â¢s private lives lead to overlooked, unnoticed love. For Hamlet, his bond with Ophelia pales in comparison to the weight of the les talionis obligation thrust upon his soul. Ophelia faces trouble of a different nature. Having been raised to be very obedient to her father and to let him think for her, she is coerced into pushing Hamlet away and not giving into her love. It is the very lack of communication of these personal dilemmas between Ophelia and Hamlet that ultimately leads to Opheliaââ¬â¢s untimely demise and brings Hamlet to the verge of hysteria. In the beginning, Ophelia is first introduced as she is being warned by her brother, Laertes. He tells her to be wary of Hamlet, for his love for her may be short-lived and she is of unequal rank to him. Shortly afterward, Opheliaââ¬â¢s father, Polonius, joins in the crusade, but in a more forceful way. While treating her as if she was a child, he commands her to turn Hamlet away completely. After Ophelia tells him that Hamlet has expressed affection for her, Polonius replies, "Affection! pooh! you speak like a green girl / Unsifted in such perilous circumstance" (1.4.94-95). Thus Ophelia is torn in two different directionsââ¬âlove for Hamlet and obedience toward her father. Since she has been trained since birth, the desires of her father push all other notions aside, and she replies as she ofte... ...e / Whose violent property fordoes itself" stating that he believed Hamletââ¬â¢s obsession with Ophelia was its cause (2.2.99-100). Finally, it is plainly established as Hamlet leaps onto Opheliaââ¬â¢s grave and declares his love for her. Their obvious love for each other is hidden, however, under a cover called lack of communication. While the couple is torn apart by forces beyond their control, they never tell each other, which leads to misunderstandings between them. To conclude, it is the very lack of communication in a relationship that can lead to misunderstandings that can obscure otherwise tight bonds. In Hamlet, Ophelia and Hamlet are a prime example of this and how it can lead to the ultimate misunderstandingââ¬âlost love. Work Cited Shakespeare, William. Hamlet. England in Literature. Eds. The Story of Lot and His Daughters Essay examples -- Religion Theology
The Story of Lot and His Daughters As discussed in class, the Old Testament is a story of the constant struggle between the Lord and his authority, and humans and their rebellion. God brings down punishment upon Man, but saves a few righteous individuals. It is within the framework of this constant struggle that the rules of an evolving society are laid down and recorded. In the story of Lot and his daughters, we see the taboos of disobedience to the Lord, incest and poor hospitality condemned. The pericope begins in Genesis 19, when the Lord tells Abraham that he will destroy Sodom unless he can find ten righteous men in the city. The angels of the lord come to Sodom to find its righteous men, and Abrahamââ¬â¢s nephew, Lot, receives them. He treats them as honored guests, washing their feet and feeding them. A crowd of overly curious Sodomites harass Lot, demanding to see his guests. Lot protects his guests, even offering his two virgin daughters up in their stead. This can be read in two ways. One sees this as an act of pandering his daughters out. This calls into question Lotââ¬â¢s values. His good treatment of the angels, and Godââ¬â¢s subsequent protection of Lot, shows him to be righteous, so this must not be the case. I choose to go with the chain of thought that this is meant to be an example of the Sodomitesââ¬â¢ lack of interest in women. They ignore the offer and try to attack Lot and his household. Lotââ¬â¢s actions stress the importance of being a good host at a time when the only things that mattered were oneââ¬â¢s family or tribe name, and oneââ¬â¢s fair treatment of those one came in contact with. In Danteââ¬â¢s Inferno, in the Ninth Circle of Hell, traitors to guests are second only to traitors to benefactors as far ... ...ventually attempting to curse and rule over them. In Deuteronomy 2:8-21, we see that the Lord had the Israelites leave both tribes alone, showing a small amount of favor for Lot and his descendants. In fact, the Moabites resurface throughout the Old Testament, at times even subjugating the Israelites (Judges 3:12-29). It is possible that the Lord used the Moabites to teach the Israelites the importance of staying true to him, again echoing the constant struggle between the benefactor and his family. This rebellion and punishment simply repeat the cycle of the power struggle between God and Mankind that the Old Testament is based on. It is a book of lessons for living a life in a time when societies were still learning how to function. Through the story of Lot, three rules of society are re-stressed. They are to obey authority, be hospitable, and avoid incest.

The idea of the philosophy is to build trust within employees and customers within the company to retain loyalty and confidence within the service. Once the customers trust has been obtained, Landslide Limousine Service must continue to work hard to maintain the trust. Identifying employeeââ¬â¢s skills It is important for any business to employ personnel with the required job skills. These skills are important because it reduces the amount of training required to get the employee ready for service. The employees knowledge and skills can guarantee customer satisfaction and positive reputation for the company. According to the textbook, Managing Human Resources, 9th edition, by W.F. Cascio, explains four levels of analysis to determine training needs and what can be achieved. The four levels of training are organizational analysis, demographic analysis, operations analysis, and individual analysis (Cascio, 2013, p. 317-318). The organizational analysis identifies if the training supports companyââ¬â¢s direction, personnel training activity, andà resources available. Demographic analysis determines employeeââ¬â¢s special need at different hierarchy levels. Operations analysis identify what an employees should do to perform competently, and individual analysis focus on the type of training should be provided to a specific individual (Cascio, 2013). According to Cascio, with a job analysis the business can identify tasks and required characteristics to perform a job (Cascio, 2013). The four levels of training is a helpful tool to identify areas of improvement. Training at all levels is important because though training we improve our overall performance. Methods to measure the employeeââ¬â¢s skills For any business is important to measure employee skill performance to determine if the employees targets have been accomplished. According to, Employee Performance Measurement Tools, it explain how a company can measure performance with performance appraisals, productivity tests, and 360-Degree Feedback. The performance appraisal is an annual method on where the employee is evaluated by management. The evaluation identifies how well the employee is doing for a period of time and if action in required for improvement. In the performance appraisal, identifying future goals and needs are important to insure the employee understands what is expected of him or her. Productivity test can help measure employee performance in quantifiable terms. During the performance evaluation, management will determine if the employee will receive a raise and notify the employee what the raise increase will be and how they determined the raise amount. The amount of the raise has a direct correlation on the final scores of the performance evaluation. While employed at United Parcel Service (UPS), my employer used the performance evaluation and it was a great tool. Not only did this evaluation identify areas of improvements but it also allowed me to have a one to one meeting with my direct supervisor. Our meetings over lunch, allowed me to get to know my supervisor on a more personal level. The overall experience in my opinion was great because it energized me. My supervisor communicated how important I was to the organization and how my contributions affected the overall performance of the organization. Process for identifying skill gaps An analysis to address skill gaps is important at any employee level. Theà analysis identifies the responsibility, knowledge, and skills required for a specific job. If an employee is currently performing a job but changes are made to the job description, addressing the gaps will be to identify any characteristic missed to train the employee or improve the process. It is common to find skills gaps when an employee change jobs or lacks of education and training to perform their job. According to How to Develop a Skill Gap Analysis, provides four steps to develop a skill gap analysis: identify business goals, collect data, understand data to make recommendations, and develop a training plan to address skills gaps in the current environment. It is crucial to identify business goals to remain competitive and create a project plan with the strategic objectives. The collected data can help identify skills and knowledge of every employee performing a role in the company. After data is collected, recommendations can be made to improve areas, such as communication, leadership, teamwork, sales, service, and project management. The training plan to address skills gaps in the organization can help determine appropriate and effective training to retain employees to retention and business performance. Identifying skill gaps within employees can also be useful in determining which supervisor is needed in that area. For example, if an employee is weak in a particular area transferring a strong and knowledgeable supervisor might assist the employee with better understanding his job function. Effective performance feedback It is very important to deliver effective performance feedback with positive attitude. Employees appreciate advice and positive coaching to help improve mistakes. According to How to Deliver Effective Performance Appraisals, the author explain different steps for effective performance appraisals: establish an appraisal method, effective eye contact, start with negative feedback end with positive suggestions, set new goals, have an open dialogue with the employee, explain if the employee is a candidate for promotion or raise. The first step is important because the method is selected to provide effective feedback. Two examples are the 360-degree feedback appraisal and self-evaluation for employees to share thoughts and ideas. At the interview, it is crucial to maintain good eye contact to develop trust from both sides and show respect. Body language is important because it canà show attitude or negative feedback. It is important to start with negative feedback to end with positive observations and set realistic goals for the next time period. In addition, itââ¬â¢s important for management to focus on the employee and his related job and not combine personal feelings or emotions into the feedback. During the feedback is important to have open dialogues to allow the employees to share his or her opinions and ideas. It is important for management to share decisions made by upper level management on behalf of the employee. Conclusion In conclusion, itââ¬â¢s important for management to understand the recommendations described above evolve. As time and the level of growth of the organization changes, so will the methods. itââ¬â¢s important for management to understand that change is always important. As customers, technology, expectations, and workforce change, the organization must be ready for what is to come. Most of the successful organizations of 2015 have anticipated a change in the market. So when the change occurred, they were ready and adapted instead of playing catch up with the change. References El-Shishini, H. (2001, December 13).
